Preparing the Wall

One concern with wood paneling is how slick it is. It tends to be a very smooth surface that doesn’t hold paint very well. To prepare it for paint, you need to sand it with a medium-grit sandpaper. If you have a large wall or multiple walls to paint, you do not have to do it by hand. An orbital sander is a great choice, but be careful if you use a belt sander. They tend to be very powerful and could strip too much of the surface too quickly. You do not want to sand it all the way down to the bare wood. Instead, you want to rough up the surface enough so that it is receptive to paint. Also, be sure to hit every part of the wall. Opening all the windows and turning on all the lights is recommended because it will allow you to see the spots where the wall has not been sufficiently sanded. These spots will not hold paint as well, and they will also give a different sheen to the paint, which will affect the consistency of the color.

Before sanding, you’ll need to clean the wall and fill in any nail holes with wood putty. Once you’ve sanded the entire wall, you are ready to start painting.

Painting the Wall

Once you’ve cleaned and sanded your wall, you need to start painting. Choosing a roller is very important. You need a roller that has a medium nap. The nap should be long enough that it can apply paint into the vertical grooves built into the wall, but it should not be so long that you cannot apply an even coat. If the nap is too long, it creates brush strokes that are difficult to rectify.

Filling the vertical grooves is one of the most difficult parts of painting a paneled wall. That’s why it’s so important to use consistent vertical strokes. If you paint side to side or diagonally, the roller might skip over the lip of the grooves and leave inconsistencies. You should paint in vertical strokes that are as straight as possible. Also, you should be sure to always finish with a smooth downward stroke toward the floor.

Do not attempt to fill the crevices by applying more pressure over the crevices. This will cause unevenness in the color and the consistency of the coat. Apply the same number of coats to every wall with the same amount of pressure.

Preparation

You have to prepare the surface properly before you can paint it. Just because it is vinyl siding doesn’t mean you have to do anything different. In fact, you might be surprised to learn that vinyl siding is easier to prep as compared to aluminum or any other types of siding you get for your home. The first step is to clean the siding. You can simply do that using a pre-paint solution. This way, any dirt or grime on the surface will come off. Alternately, you can apply a pressure washer to the siding to clean it up or go for some good old-fashioned hand scrubbing.

This might require some more effort if you have mold on the siding or any other similar problem. In that case, you should mix the pre-paint solution in warm water and add some chlorine bleach. Clean the surface using the solution you have prepared, spraying it on so that you have better control. Make sure you cover your eyes and nose when cleaning the vinyl siding, to be on the safe side.

Colors

The next step is selecting the right color for the vinyl siding. The worst thing you can do is select a color that is darker than the actual color of the siding. In that case, all you will end up doing is causing the siding to absorb more heat, and that is something you don’t want. In that case, the heat will be trapped between the siding and the paint you have applied on it, leading to warping, for which there is no solution. Select a lighter color and also make sure the type of paint you choose is safe to use on vinyl.

Testing

Last, but not the least, you have to make sure the paint ‘sticks’ to the siding. The best way to go about this is applying a patch of paint to a part of the siding. Once this is done, you can check the adhesion. Paint a patch and then let it dry. Next, use a knife to make zigzag patterns on the paint. Then, apply packing tape on it and peel it off. If some paint comes off, only a minute amount, you are good to go. However, if a thin film comes off, the paint is not sticking properly.

• There is no point painting the walls outside your home if they are not clean. It is obvious that the exterior walls attract more dust and grime than the walls inside. Hence, the first step should be to hose them down. For this, you will need a pressure washer. However, you cannot just spray the walls. You have to wash them smoothly, going from top to bottom. This way, the dirt and debris will come down towards the ground, instead of accumulating on the wall itself.
• As with painting the interior, you have to make sure the surface of the walls is smooth and requires no repairs before you start painting. If there are any cracks or bumps on the wall, make sure you remove them. Also, you have to wait till the wall is completely dry after the repairs are made before you even consider painting.
• And speaking of paint, you have to remove the loose paint from the wall. For this, lay down cloths on the ground around the area where you spot chipped paint. Use a paint scraper to extract any loose paint and it will come off easily, leaving you a smooth surface that you can paint on without hassle.
• Take a look at the trims around the exterior surface of your home, especially around the windows and doors. Then, use a caulk gun and start caulking. You have to make sure you add caulk to any point of the wall where different materials meet. Otherwise, the paint job will not be smooth.
• It goes without saying that you need to cover the windows and doors before you paint to protect them from spills and drips. Also, use painter’s tape to ensure the finish is precise. Not to forget, cover up any sockets and outlets on the walls as well as lights or any other electrical connection.
• Once you have taken care of the steps mentioned above, you can start painting outdoors. However, before you do so, make sure the weather is conducive. You cannot paint the exterior of your home if there is a chance of rain or the humidity level is high. Otherwise, it would take an eternity for the paint to dry. Also, if it rains, your paint job might get ruined.
