Time It Takes To Paint An Average Sized Room

When it’s time to paint, it’s definitely important that homeowners ask for a written estimate from a professional painter. Whomever you hire, they should not only provide references and a true cost for the job, but should also be able to estimate the timing of the job. Homeowners should know if their painter is charging a fair price for their time and completion of a interior paint project.

Of course, every painting contractor works differently, but for the most part, the time it takes to paint a room will depend upon the following factors:

Size of the room

Type and sheen of paint (Flat, Latex, Satin)

Number of paint colors to be used in each room

Ceiling and trim

Rolling/Painting the Walls

Cleanup

Touchup

The current report from the National Home Builder Association states that the average size for a bedroom is 432 square feet. This amounts to roughly a 13′ x 13′ bedroom with 8′ ceilings

The standard method for most professional painters is to apply one coat of primer and two coats of paint on the walls, and one coat of a standard white paint on the ceiling. It can take longer if there are different colors on each wall within a room. Typically, lighter paint colors will only need two coats, but darker paint colors will probably need three to four coats.

To prep any room for painting, it’s essential to first wipe down the walls and all the trim with a damp rag to remove dust and to allow the painters tape to stick properly. For an average sized room, this step should take about 10 minutes.

Once the walls and trim have been cleaned, the painter should remove outlet and switch covers so they don’t get covered with paint. It usually takes 50 minutes to properly tape a room from start to finish. Your painting professional should use a high-quality tape in order to save time with taping the room. If the tape is poor-quality, it will not stick properly and the paint could leak through.

Your painting professional should then sand the walls with either a sanding sponge or a sanding pole. Whatever sanding dust remains should be wiped off the walls with a dust brush, damp rag or shop vac. It should take about 20 minutes for this step if your professional has the right tools.

The very last step to prep the room for painting will be to lay out drop cloths and set up paint brushes, rollers and trays. It should take about 10 minutes for any room to complete this step.

ESTIMATED PAINTING PREP TIME FOR AN AVERAGE ROOM: 90 Minutes

Cutting in the ceiling involves painting next to the ceiling with your brush to create a sharp clean line in the corner where the walls meet the ceiling. When you hire an experienced professional, it should roughly take about 20 minutes for the first coat of paint and 10 for the second. Cutting in the trim is similar to cutting in the ceiling but you have the trim already taped off, so it should only take 20 minutes for that.
The painter should be able to use a paint brush next to the trim, outlets, and switch covers where a roller cannot get to. Cutting in trim should take roughly 40 minutes per coat for an average room.

ESTIMATED TIME TO CUT IN CEILINGS AND TRIM: 60 Minutes

This is the final step in painting a room and is quite easy if the room has been prepped properly. Rolling is much more efficient and the painter should constantly look back over their work. If there are any missed spots, they can re-roll over those areas for a smooth finish. Any professional should only spend about 60 minutes to roll out each coat of paint in an average room.

ESTIMATED TIME TO ROLL OUT WALLS: 60 Minutes

The final step is essential for the completion of any painting project. The painter should remove the tape off of the trim, cleanup up any dust, fold up drop cloths, and replace all the outlet and switch covers. The best professional will also inspect the room for any missed spots, light areas, paint on trim or paint on the ceiling. The timing of this step could depend on whether the painter cleans as they work. It should take about 30 minutes to completely put the room back together.

ESTIMATED TIME FOR CLEANUP: 30 Minutes

So the total time a professional painter should spend painting an average sized room should be somewhere around 4 hours.

Painting Or Staining Wood

If the rooms in your home have existing woodwork, you can paint or stain it to enhance the look of any room. Changing woodwork is sometimes overlooked when deciding on how to transform the interior of a home, especially with things like painting interior doors. If the woodwork is simple, elaborate or intricate, hiring a professional painter will you’re your trim a polished, beautiful look.

It’s best to consider the following factors when choosing to paint or stain your woodwork:

Look at the quality of the wood. Usually, there are two types of woodwork – “paint grade” or “stain grade.” There’s an easy way to check the quality of your trim if it has already been stained. If it’s good quality, the woodgrain will probably show through the stain. When you are lucky to have a higher quality wood, paint may not be the best option. Older woodwork obviously will have dings, cracks, and holes, so painting the trim would be the best option, even if the wood is higher quality in other areas.

What is also important to consider is the style and era in which your home was built. With a newer home, painting the trim will be much easier to maintain. With an older home it’s probable that you have higher-quality woodwork, so staining it to bring out it’s natural beauty would be prudent.

What about the trim in the rest of your home? Painted or stained? When you are getting ready to decide on painting or staining wood, remember to look at the trim in other rooms of your home. Is it already painted or stained? You’ll want to be sure that you choose to be consistent throughout your home. If most of the trim in your home is stained, except the room you’re working on, then it’s wise to stain the woodwork to match.

Choosing a paint color. Painting your woodwork a bright white or pale shade of beige will definitely brighten the room. white can help liven it up. If you have a great amount of natural light flowing in, you should paint your baseboards, doors, or molding a darker color for contrast against the bright room. Deciding to paint or stain trim can be a difficult decision. It’s common for people to select a white hue color for their woodwork, since it is so versatile. The simplicity of white trim can work well with all sorts of room decor, and other accent wall paint colors, making a room look more modern.

Remember to consider the size of your room when making the decision to paint trim. When you begin to strategize with your professional painter or designer, you must think about where one style will stop and the next starts.

Choosing a stain color. Before you stain wood, you should understand the type of wood you’re staining. The actual species of wood matters because with each different wood grain, the stain will adhere differently.

It may be overwhelming to make the decision to paint or stain – if that’s the case, hire a professional painter to help you figure it out. We hire the best color experts at J. Canabe. Our team can help you make smart decisions on how to best finish your woodwork – whether your painting or staining wood. Don’t hesitate to call us for answers to your questions or help on your next painting project.

Painting Interior Doors

There are so many different ways to update your home, but a really quick way to make an impact is to repaint the doors. Although it may seem easy, painting interior doors in your home can actually be quite challenging, so it’s best to leave this project to a professional painter.

Here are some ideas on how to start this type of paint project:

Color Choice
There are hundreds of colors which make sense for doors, but it’s wise to test out as many colors as you can before you make a final choice. Trying the small sample cans is always a good idea so you can see the swatches on the door at different times of the day. It’s wise to choose a darker color for your door if your house is painted a light color, or if your door is a natural wood color you can also try staining the woodwork to bring out the natural beauty.

Amount and Type of Paint
Depending on the size and location of your door, the amount of paint needed could vary greatly. On average, for every door you’re going to paint, you’ll probably need about one quart of paint. If you’re painting the front door of your home and it does not have an outside storm door, you’ll probably want to choose a high-quality exterior paint.

Typically, glossy paints are preferred for doors and trim because:

They are best for highlighting architectural features

They are more durable because they help avoid nicks and scrapes

They and can hide imperfections on the door

Whether the paint you choose is latex or oil paint, be sure to check with your painter to see which one will have the best coverage on your specific door.

Prep Work
Your painter will give you more direction, but it’s much easier to remove the door you are painting from its hinges. If there is a storm or glass door outside the door you’re painting, it will help to keep insects and other debris from entering your home. It’s crucial to first prime the door before painting, especially if you are changing the color of the door. Prior to your first paint step, you will also want to remove all the hardware. It’s also important that you clean the door with a wet rag, and then use a sander or sandpaper to remove any imperfections.

Every door needs to be primed and the primer will cover the entire door. Be sure to have your painter use a paint roller in order to apply the primer. When the primer is dry, your painter will go over any trim work or details on the door. A paintbrush will give you a nice “hand-painted” look. Even if you use a roller, you can use a brush for the final coat to achieve this look. Allow the door to dry completely before reattaching the hardware and rehanging the door, if you removed it to paint.

Most professional painters have great expertise, but finding one that has experience painting doors may be a challenge. Be sure to hire someone who has had experience with painting interior doors. If your doors are in need of a paint, please contact us today for an estimate – we’ll be happy to help make your home look amazingly beautiful, either way!

Staining Woodwork

Staining woodwork is one of the best ways to add elegance in your home. Staining allows the natural beauty of your woodwork to shine through, and preserves it from age and damage. Most homes in the U.S. have beautiful wood features that should be specially cared for. It may seem like staining woodwork in your home could be easy, but to get the best results, it’s better to leave the job to a professional painter.

Know the Type of Wood You are Staining
There are several factors you need to consider when staining woodwork. It’s crucial that you know the type of wood you’re staining before you begin. Depending on the type of wood it is, your painter will have to choose an appropriate stain to match.

Typically, it’s much more difficult to stain softwoods than it is to stain hardwoods. The softwoods are white pine, alder, spruce and fir. These woods have a more open cell structure and tend to absorb stain at a faster rate, like a sponge soaks up water. The hardwoods are oak, poplar, cherry and walnut. These woods will be easier to work with because the stain won’t soak in so fast.

Remember, it’s much easier to make wood look darker than it is to take a dark wood and make it lighter. It’s best to have your painter start with a lighter stain and then if a darker color is needed, they can apply it to complete the look.

Proper Sanding is Essential
Professionals have the expertise to sand the wood down so it becomes super smooth. There are probably three different grits of sandpaper needed – 100 grit, 150 grit and 220 grit. Your professional will also select the right type of sandpaper for the wood you have. Aluminum oxide sandpaper has a brown abrasive which self-sharpens as you use it. Red garnet sandpaper has an orange abrasive which starts to round off as you sand. Either one works well, but if you are looking for a highly desirable burnished finish to the wood, your professional may want to use red garnet.

Use a Wood Conditioner After Sanding
Your professional should be using a wood conditioner to prepare the wood for staining. These conditioners look clear and are brushed directly onto the sanded wood. For softwoods, a wood conditioner is essential because it will fill the pores in the wood cells to block the stain from soaking in so fast. The wood conditioners are very easy to use and the drying time is fast, so your painter can stain the wood within a few hours after applying the conditioner.

Make sure your painter tests several pieces of your wood before they begin staining. This is the best way for you to figure out how deep or dark you want the depth of color to be. At J. Canabe, our color experts can choose the right type of stain for your woodwork. We’ve helped our loyal customers enhance the beauty of the wood in their home – contact us today to learn more about our services.

Painting Gypsum Board

Back in the day, most pre-war homes were constructed using wood lath and three coats of plaster. The construction was very labor intensive and took an extraordinary amount of time. It was necessary to hire a skilled plasterer to make sure the plaster was properly applied and the maintenance was a bit overwhelming for homeowners.

When World War II was over, there was a huge surge in America for more affordable housing. The U.S. Gypsum Company (USG) had invented gypsum board (sheet rock) way back in 1916. Unfortunately, American builders did not begin using it for another 25 years because the material was first created in smaller tiles. Soon after builders saw its versatility and began ordering it, it was produced with a larger, single layer of compressed gypsum sandwiched between two sheets of heavy paper.

Gypsum board became a durable surface that could be screwed or nailed to studs of any structure at half the cost of plaster and at twice the speed. Since it was not wet like plaster, it could be painted right away and thus got the nickname “drywall.”

Originally, plaster walls were a great choice because they were extremely thick and that provided excellent insulation for the home. The plaster was usually applied onto horizontal strips of wood, called lathe, and as it oozed through the spaces on the backside, it dried. The excess plaster hardened into the firm foundation that holds up the remaining layers.

Whenever plaster is present, there are typically three coats of plaster around 7/8″ thick, and then there’s the 1/4″ wood lathe that supports the plaster. Just for comparison, today’s most common gypsum board measures at only a 1/2″ thick. Today, it’s costly to have a full 3-coat plaster wall installed, but if your home already has old plaster walls that have not been maintained well, there’s an easy fix to cover up unsightly cracks and holes.

These days, when renovations occur, older homes usually gutted to the studs so that new drywall can be installed to replace the existing plaster, but the demolition work is expensive and takes an extraordinary amount of time. It’s faster, cheaper and easier to just cover over the plaster with an adequate amount of drywall and paint. It’s best to hire a professional who can handle both painting gypsum board and plaster to do the job.

Most professional contractors have great expertise, but finding one that has experience with covering plaster and managing older home renovations may be a challenge. Be sure to hire someone who has had experience with aging plaster walls, as well as more modern construction. Painters that specialize in painting gypsum board should be equipped with the proper tools to create a smooth finish on the walls of your home. Whether your plaster walls need repairing, or maybe just a fresh coat of paint, please contact us today for an estimate – we’ll be happy to help make your home look amazingly beautiful, either way!

Every homeowner deals with the challenge of how to make the interior of their home special. The quickest and most cost-effective solution is to give your space a fresh coat of paint. Whether you are updating a living room, dining room, bedroom or kitchen, there are many things to consider when starting any interior paint project.

Homeowners often think that a painting the inside of their home could easily be a DIY project. However, the advantage of hiring a professional painter is that you will end up saving money, because the interior paint project will be done by someone with more expertise and better efficiency.

The cost savings can be large or small, depending on your budget and the number of rooms that need painting. Most professional painters will provide you with an estimate that considers all the important parameters of the interior paint project – room type and size, selection of paint finish, room prep, cleanup and project timing.

Of course, selecting the right paint shade for a room can be overwhelming because there are so many beautiful shades to choose from. Wondering where to start? We suggest considering both the size and type of your room first, the amount of natural light in the space, and of course, your desired color palette.

The paint color will always be determined after you consider size and type of room you are painting. For larger rooms, like the living room, it’s important that you know where the furniture will be placed and which remaining walls can be used as focal points. For instance, if your living room is a rectangle and at one of the short ends of it is a fireplace, that would be considered a focal point in the room.

It’s also wise that you consider the function of each room and how often it will be used in both daytime and nighttime. Smaller rooms definitely benefit from a lighter color palette so they appear larger when painted. The paint will look different during each time of day and you will want to compare how it looks in natural and artificial sunlight.

It’s important to choose a color palette that matches the style of the rest of your home. It’s smart to test out your paint colors before you invest in buying gallons. Whatever color palette you have in mind, make sure you bring physical paper paint samples home to make sure you like the way it looks in the room. When you narrow down the paper samples, choose three or four paint colors to test on your walls before you hire a professional painter.

After all of these things have been considered, then you can easily call a professional painter in your area to start your interior paint project. Remember to get references from other homeowners and also choose someone who is eager to point out the challenges ahead of time. It’s always possible to paint the interior of your home – especially when you hire the right painting professional.

Interior Painting In The Winter

It’s obvious why most homeowners want to start their indoor painting projects during warm weather months – better circulation of air when the windows are open! However, depending on what you want to paint and what type of paint you’re using, even the winter may be a great time to paint.

In winter, if the weather is really bad, it may mean most of your exterior remodeling efforts are put on hold. The good news is that cold, wintery days don’t always include snow, so they offer the perfect opportunity to tackle interior house painting projects, like repainting windows. Here are some of the reasons why interior painting in the winter is a good idea:

Painting Can be Cheaper in the Winter

There is definitely more demand for professional painters in the spring and summer seasons, so that ensures that painters’ price their projects more competitively. Winter is such an extremely slow season for painting companies (especially professional exterior painters), but it’s great for customers who are on a budget. Typically, prices should be about 20 to 40 percent lower during the winter, because it’s considered off-peak painting season. Another advantage to choosing winter months is that your painter may be able to devote more attention and time to your job.

More Flexibility With Time

Painting companies usually are more flexible with their time in the winter months. It’s a lighter schedule for them and they may be able to give you more flexibility with the timing of the paint project. There are also more painters available to execute your project, so it’s possible that it could be finished in half the time. The sun also tends to rise earlier in winter, so painters can start earlier in the day and finish working earlier in the afternoon or evening. This gives you more free time to do whatever else you need to do for the rest of the day.

Paint Cures Faster in Cold, Dry, Air

Higher temperatures are never ideal for interior painting projects. The more humidity in the air, the longer it will take for your interior paint to dry. With drier and colder air, the paint will cure so much faster, which means less time spent waiting for multiple coats to be applied.

Increase Your Property Value in Time for Spring

Interior painting in the winter will help you sell it in the spring. You will be able to beat the other sellers to market by being prepared. Every house put up for sale will need a fresh coat of paint to help buyers make their purchasing decision.

No matter the reason, it’s always possible to paint the interior of your home in the winter – especially when you hire the right painting professional.

At J.Canabe, our painting experts will work with you to determine the best way to execute your paint project. We will create the proper timing and choose the best paint for your project within your budget. Contact us today to learn more about our services – we’re here to answer your painting questions!

Remove Textured Walls

Back in the day, it was considered cost-effective for indoor walls to be covered with some kind of plaster. Textured interior walls most often have a practical function, since the texture hides the signs of drywall installation—that is, the taped seams where the sheets of drywall meet—and other imperfections. Because of its easy application, you would often find textured walls in commercial buildings. The textured look was quite popular in the 1960s and 1970s, but as time passed, the plaster crack and crumble, making its maintenance more expensive than its initial application.

Removing textured coating from your walls is not easy and it’s highly recommended that you hire a professional painter in New Jersey that has the right expertise. There are many steps to consider with removing any kind of plaster and it should be left to a professional.

Step #1: SANDING
The plaster needs to be sanded down and smoothed out and filled in with a joint compound – called skim coating. This technique works on every type of textured surface, including popcorn ceilings. There are other ways to smooth out a plastered wall – spray water on the surface to loosen the texture so it can be scraped off. This will create a huge cleanup and could also ruin the smooth surface of the wall.

Step #2: CLEANING
Whatever dust that falls from all the sanding in step one will need to be cleaned up. The walls should be wiped down with a damp cloth. Typically, a textured application is sprayed on and depending on what size of mess you’re dealing with, you may want to do two rounds of cleaning.

Step #3: APPLY A SKIM COAT
When drywall is installed, the fasteners and taped seams are skim coated—covered with a thin coat of joint compound, or “mud,” to level the surface in preparation for painting or papering. The same technique remove textured walls. A thin coat of mud is applied over the entire wall surface, allowed to dry, and then sanded smooth. Skim coating a whole room is both messy and time-consuming. The job is perhaps best left to a professional who has the experience to help avoid a dust storm in your home. Once the repaired surface is smooth, it can be sealed with a primer and then painted or wallpapered, as desired.

Step #4: INSTALL DRYWALL
If the walls have sustained water damage or are showing significant cracks, it might just be easier to cover the surface of the wall with ¼-inch drywall. This could be less expensive than skim coating the whole room, but installing new drywall also means skim-coating to cover the seams and get a smooth surface.

Painting A New House

Most people spend a pretty penny on their new home before they move in. Along with the hefty down payment, there are usually some fixes and updates that need to be made before you move in. A fresh coat of paint in each of the rooms always seems like a great way to make your new home yours.

It’s often difficult for non-professionals to choose paint colors that are both beautiful and appropriate for the rooms in their home. Because paint comes in a million different combinations of hues, sheens and colors, it can be overwhelming to select the right color for your space. For some added inspiration for painting a new house, check out our article on the top 3 trending 2019 paint colors.

Latex paint is the most commonly used for its ease of clean up and lasting durability. Latex paint also is more fade resistant than oil and it creates a smoother finish. Oil-based paint is better to use for wood moldings and trim, because it will cover imperfections much better than a latex paint would.

Sheen level is also a struggle to decide upon when painting a new house. The glossier the paint, the easier it is to clean up, so it’s probably best to use a high gloss paint in a kids’ room. Semi-gloss paint is still a great choice for kitchens and bathrooms because it can be cleaned easily. Satin sheens are appropriate for kitchens, baths and hallways because they have a nice smooth finish without a shiny look. If your walls have lots of imperfections, it’s best to choose a flat or matte finish. The best part with this type of paint, is that you can usually get away with one coat.

Using a color wheel is an essential tool to use when you’re choosing paint colors. The opposite colors on the color wheel will sometimes help you create a unique color palette for your home. There are several ways to select paint colors and create different looks:

For a subtle and soothing look:

To create a subtle and soothing look in a space, designers recommend a monochromatic approach. A variety of blue shades will always look good in a bathroom or a bedroom if you want the feeling of calmness. But you overlap the shades of any color in any room you’d like. Any combination of varying shades within the same color scheme will create a tranquil, peaceful environment and a calm ambiance.

For a more elegant look:

An elegant look is easy to create with a palette of neutral colors. Neutral colors such as coconut, almond, latte and clay are very popular right now. When most of the room is painted one of these elegant colors, you can accent with other splashes of color. Whether it’s a bright-colored throw, pillow or vase give you lots of flexibility in quickly changing the feel of the room. The lighter hue of color you choose, the more spacious the room will appear.

For a more vibrant look:

Choosing vibrant colors like orange, gold, red and dark purples can help create a unique space that stands out. Be sure to choose two colors next to each other on the color wheel for a visual contrast as one will stand out from the other. It’s best to pick a focal point when you are painting a room – it will help you choose the color more quickly. You can use paint colors to highlight any interesting aspect in your room – visible stairways and other unique accents will definitely stand out when you use vibrant colors.

Kids Room:

It’s always important to choose paint colors that will not need updating often when painting a new house, but there’s one room that will need updating every two to three years – your kids’ room. Kids rooms don’t always have to be in primary colors or pastels – there are some amazing color choices for kids rooms these days. Try to choose colors that inspire creativity and imagination for your kids. Their environment should be a place where they can enjoy spending time.

In smaller rooms, neutral colors tend to work best. White, beige or gray are the most basic neutrals and will help the rooms feel larger. You can have the kids get involved in choosing more colorful accents like pillows, rugs, wall decals, and bedding to complement the room.

With the right paint color and a little imagination, you can easily change the look and feel of a room. Whatever the shape and size of your room, it’s always best to hire a professional painter to do the work. Professional painters can help you choose an eco-friendly paint can be helping the keep the air you breathe safe and they are knowledgeable about paint that features low odors and zero VOCs.

Hiring a professional painter is important and at J Canabe, we have special color experts who can work to find the right paint in the perfect color when painting a new house. Contact us today for more information.
