What is the Average Time to Paint a Room?
May 22, 2017Do You Know About the Harmful Effects of Lead Paint?
June 30, 2017Using professional painting services really matters when you’re trying to get the job done on time, within budget, and without errors.
It’s wise to choose someone who has outstanding references for their past work and can show you before and after photos of what they’ve painted. Whomever you choose as your painter, be sure they understand the vision for your project and that they are clear on timing as well.
Found the Painter, So What Happens Next?
Any professional painter will begin an indoor painting project by moving as much as possible out of the room. Large pieces of furniture do not have to be removed – instead they can be covered and placed in the center of the room. If possible, the doors, hardware and light fixtures should also be removed prior to painting.
Professional painting services will most likely use high-quality drop cloths for the job. The cheap ones are not worth the money – they don’t provide coverage and they tend to tear. First, the painter will prepare the wall surfaces by filling in any cracks and dents prior to painting.
The painter should next sand the wall surfaces with high quality sandpaper. There is also a liquid sandpaper product which they may also use to degloss the surface. Then, walls are typically washed with trisodium phosphate (TSP) or a mild cleaner to remove any dust. Next, the painter will use blue painters tape around the windows and trim to prevent bleeding.
Be sure your painter is using a good primer – one that is formulated to create a solid, even base, seal stains and ensure that paint is applied smoothly. A low-quality primer can stop the paint from adhering properly and it could affect the appearance of the topcoat.
Professional painters should be able to recommend what type of paint you need in each room. However, it’s best to share your design ideas with the painter up front so they can purchase and mix the paint prior to starting the job.
Generally, glossy paints are more stain-resistant, flat paints are for ceilings and formal rooms and an eggshell gloss works well for hallways, kids’ rooms, even kitchens and baths. The cost of each gallon of paint should range from $20 to $45 per gallon and you should purchase enough to put two coats of paint on the walls.
